As rea\u00e7\u00f5es de transesterifica\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00e3o realizadas com \u00e1lcool em excesso. No Brasil, \u00e9 utilizado principalmente o etanol, um \u00e1lcool obtido da cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar. O<strong> <\/strong>etanol \u00e9 menos reativo do que o metanol&nbsp;para conduzir a rea\u00e7\u00e3o de transesterifica\u00e7\u00e3o. Sua toxidade \u00e9 consideravelmente menor do  que a do \u00f3leo diesel mineral.
